Join us on September 25, 2024 as Fathom, Google’s Bellwether team and Reask bring together a group of leaders from insurance and financial markets for a panel and networking event during Climate Week NYC. Don’t miss out on the discussion on the critical role that data plays in enhancing resilience and mitigating the financial risk associated with climate change.
What: Flood, wind and fire: data driven climate resilience
When: September 25, 17:00 – 21:00
Where: Saint John’s Terminal, 550 Washington St., New York, NY 10013
Extreme weather events such as floods, windstorms and wildfires are increasingly affecting our economy and communities, leading to significant losses across the insurance and financial sectors. According to data from the Swiss Re Institute, floods and tropical cyclones were the leading causes of economic losses in the past year, while wildfires inflicted damages amounting to $893 billion in the United States alone.
Swiss Re’s latest report, “The Heat Is (Still) On,” highlights the growing frequency and intensity of these climate-related hazards due to changing environmental conditions.
The science and technology is now available to predict, map and understand these risks, and the financial markets have the ability to translate these business threats into opportunity.
However, despite these advancements in scientific knowledge, many organizations grapple with effectively integrating this data into their investment and asset management strategies. Questions such as, “How can we begin to leverage this information to improve our decision-making?” remain at the forefront of discussions within the industry.
This event will facilitate a meaningful discussion between scientists and industry leaders, addressing the challenges faced in transforming these insights into practical applications. By bridging the gap between research and real-world application, we aim to present a comprehensive view of how data-driven approaches can enhance climate resilience.
