Flooding isn’t unprecedented or unpredictable – we know it will happen and can quantify the risk globally, nationally and locally. With the right data and scientific approach, we can inform smarter policies, designs and investments that reduce flood risk and enhance resilience.
Join Fathom and New Civil Engineer (NCE) as we bring together industry leaders and experts to explore how collaboration and evidence-based strategies can empower stakeholders and build a more sustainable, flood-resilient future.
Flooding is routinely cast in the media as unprecedented or unexpected, but we have experienced flooding before and we know flooding will happen again – for many, it will be more frequent and more extreme. Flooding is one of the most costly natural disasters in the world, but we have the ability to quantify that risk globally, nationally and locally. Best of all, with the right scientific approach and good data, industry can inform good policy, designs and investments that will verifiably reduce or mitigate flood risk and enhance the resilience of projects, infrastructure and communities. But this presents a challenge.
As the climate changes, the need to reduce or displace flood risk grows. So how do we take those who fund, commission and deliver projects – or those who live within the areas affected – on a better-informed journey that removes the impression of unpreparedness? How do we empower them by providing a better understanding of predictable risk?
That journey matters and must involve governments, asset owners, investors and communities because that journey is central to ensuring the right policy, investment and design decisions are made – informed by good scientific data, and by the evidence of the impact that interventions can have.
Hosted by Gavin Pearson, Editor at New Civil Engineer, this invite-event is an opportunity to meet industry experts and engage in meaningful discussions on how to build resilience against current and future flood and climate risk.
