About the course
Flooding is one of the most widespread and costly natural disasters, causing over USD 1.2 trillion in economic losses in the past 30 years. Insured losses have risen 30% in the last decade alone. As climate change and urbanization increase, understanding flood risk is more critical than ever.
Traditional hazard maps show areas at risk but often fail to estimate real-world damage. That’s where catastrophe models (or cat models) come in. These tools simulate thousands of disaster scenarios to assess the probability and impact of catastrophic events. Used widely in insurance, they cover perils from floods and hurricanes to wildfires, terrorism, and pandemics.
This course focuses on flood risk – one of the most complex perils to model. Through Fathom’s expertise, you’ll learn how global flood hazard maps are built, how cat models are developed, and how to interpret their results. While centered on flood modeling, the principles apply across all catastrophe models.
Whether you’re new to the field or looking to sharpen your skills, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to flood catastrophe modeling: its foundations, methods, applications, and limitations.
Launching at the start of July, be one of the first to gain access to this GARP qualification. Register your interest today.
