Senior Scientific Developer

Dr Simbi Hatchard

Simbi plays a key role in driving forward Fathom’s regional flood frequency analysis; building on the model first implemented by the company’s founders and at the core of Fathom’s primary products. Combining machine learning techniques with improvements in input data, Simbi’s work reduces the level of error in flood flow estimates, thus constraining error in flood inundation maps.

His role involves a lot of coding and problem solving to implement new methods to improve model outputs. It’s this investigative process that Simbi finds particularly satisfying about his work, and the joy of producing something tangible that can create meaningful change.

Simbi joined Fathom in 2021, while he was also in the final stretch of completing his PhD in Geography at the University of Bristol. Prior to this, Simbi had also spent time working in a number of roles within the engineering industry, including as a Flood Risk and Drainage Engineer.

Outside of work, Simbi enjoys going to the gym, playing guitar and exploring both the UK and abroad.
