We’ve published a new article in EOS discussing our work modelling flood risk across the United States. The article discusses the advantages of using emerging large scale modelling techniques against government flood hazard data. It outlines what many people know to be true; there are millions of people unknowingly exposed to flooding across the US. In the past week hurricane Florence has again demonstrated this. Emerging technologies allow for a far more comprehensive view of risk than current government data provides. These data should be used to provide this comprehensive view. They should also be used to drive a step change in flood insurance behaviour, for which there should be far higher penetration across the country.
